Meet Franky – The Heart of Mission 4938
At the heart of Mission 4938 is our mascot, Franky the Eagle a symbol of courage, honor, and sacrifice.
Franky isn’t just any eagle; he’s named after Francis Edward Hamilton, the namesake of Francis E. Hamilton VFW Post 4938 and a brave Edmond native who gave everything in service to our country.
The Story Behind the Name
Francis Edward Hamilton was born on July 20, 1920, in Kansas. After his father’s passing, his family moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, where they became deeply involved in the local community.
In 1939, Francis enlisted in the Army Air Force and later served with the 32nd Photography Squadron, 5th Reconnaissance Group. On April 20, 1944, he was aboard the SS Paul Hamilton when it was tragically struck by enemy torpedoes in the Mediterranean Sea. The resulting explosion claimed the lives of all 580 men on board, including Francis. His remains were never recovered, and he was declared Missing In Action.
Francis Hamilton’s bravery, selflessness, and sacrifice are remembered at the North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia and Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond, OK.
Franky the Eagle carries his spirit forward reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who served and inspiring us to honor their memory through our mission.
